Career Connect is an 8th grade exploratory program which allows students to participate in a variety of related careers through hands-on activities and projects.  Throughout the first semester of each school year, South Tech invites middle schools from South County to bring their 8th graders in for an exclusive field trip.  Using a career survey distributed to the schools prior to the visit day, our admissions department schedules students into morning and afternoon activities based on their top career interest areas.  Eight clusters are available and were developed based on Missouri’s Center for Career Education’s cluster arrangement.

Students arrive at South Tech between 10:05 and 10:15am and are seated in our gym.  An entertaining and informative assembly and welcome are completed by around 10:35 and students are then escorted to their first program.  Programs last between 45 minutes to an hour depending on the visiting school’s schedule and needs.  A lunch consisting of an all beef hot dog, chips, apple, rice krispie treat and beverage is provided for all attendees (students with special dietary needs are welcome to bring a sack lunch of their own).  After a brief recess in the gym, students are brought to their afternoon program.  Students are on their buses and headed back to school anywhere between 1 and 1:30pm.

Many students leave Career Connect with a new understanding about one of their career interests.  Often they will have an item they have made or a memorable experience to share that related to a field they were considering exploring at the high school or college level.  Our goal is to enhance career education at the middle school level by providing a fun, exciting, and informative experience through Career Connect.  We have heard often from our visiting students and counselors that, “This is the best field trip ever!”

We begin taking reservations for Career Connect in the Spring semester of each school year.  Many schools are now returning on a yearly basis so space is limited.  If you would like to reserve a date for your school, please call South Tech at 989.7400 and ask to speak to the Admissions Representative who covers your district.  They can also give you more information and provide you with any details you need.
