South Tech Welder Wins Big

On February 20, 2010 four South Tech students headed down to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the annual High School Senior Welding Contest. This year there were 198 competitors from 14 different states all there for the same reason, competing for a "full ride" scholarship to Tulsa Welding School. This is an extremely competitive welding contest in which students complete a welded project in a given amount of time. Out of the 198 competitors the top 50 places are scored, and the top 25 are awarded prizes based on their accomplishments. First place wins a full ride scholarship, second place wins 50% tuition paid, and third place wins 25% tuition paid, and a brand new auto-darkening welding helmet. Other prizes such as welding helmets, additional scholarships, gear packages, welders, torch outfits, and cash prizes are awarded to the top 25 students as well. South Tech students took 4 of the top 25 places this year.


Zach Settlemoir took 1st place receiving a full ride scholarship (a value of $14,690) to attend Tulsa Welding School with an additional $500.00 scholarship.	Paul Buneta placed 3rd overall receiving 25% tuition paid (a value of $3672) and an additional $500 scholarship, along with a brand new speedglass welding helmet donated by 3M Corporation.	Paul McManus placed 8th overall receiving 2-$500 scholarships.	Dan Whitney placed 25th overall receiving a $500 scholarship and an Oklahoma Steam Card Certification Test for pressure pipe applications.
