Culinary Arts Cooks Up A Winner

Congratulations to the Culinary Arts major, who won first place (gold ladle) in the soup competition held Sunday, February 21, 2010. There were 34 competing soups from some of the leading restaurants in the St. Louis metropolitan area. I thought our chances were pretty good when I observed three lines - Line "A" for soups 1-17, Line "B" for soups 18-34, and a long third line for those requesting their second, third,...sample of the Raspberry White Chocolate Swirl with Brownie Croutons desert soup from South Technical High School. I do not know the exact number of people who sampled the soups, but there had been over 1,000 tickets sold by the time I arrived and there were no parking spaces in the entire park causing the parking to overflow onto the city streets of Kirkwood. South Tech passed out 40 gallons of Soup to the large crowd. At the end of the competition with winners announced, there was another line at our table requesting the recipe, information about South Tech, and hours our restaurant was open to the public.

South Tech Welder Wins Big

On February 20, 2010 four South Tech students headed down to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the annual High School Senior Welding Contest. This year there were 198 competitors from 14 different states all there for the same reason, competing for a "full ride" scholarship to Tulsa Welding School. This is an extremely competitive welding contest in which students complete a welded project in a given amount of time. Out of the 198 competitors the top 50 places are scored, and the top 25 are awarded prizes based on their accomplishments. First place wins a full ride scholarship, second place wins 50% tuition paid, and third place wins 25% tuition paid, and a brand new auto-darkening welding helmet. Other prizes such as welding helmets, additional scholarships, gear packages, welders, torch outfits, and cash prizes are awarded to the top 25 students as well. South Tech students took 4 of the top 25 places this year.

Help for Haiti
Members of South Tech's chapter of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) held a drive to raise money for Haiti. The idea of the drive began as a way to show support for a fellow classmate, who is from Haiti. The students raised over 500 dollars to help the earthquake victims. On January 26, Dean Adams came to accept the money for the American Red Cross. During her visit she told the students what the Red Cross was doing to help in Haiti and answered questions about the survivors and their situation.
Missouri Tech Prep Student of the Year
I am extremely pleased that we have selected Crystal Crawford to represent South Technical High School and the Special School District of St. Louis County as the Tech Prep Student of the Year. Crystal is an exceptional young lady who demonstrates the following personal abilities and qualities.
-Crystal has maintained perfect attendance during her two years at South Tech. This is noteworthy because Crystal suffers from scoliosis, which often causes discomfort when sitting for long periods of time.
